We all know we need to do our bit for the environment, we all know we should recycle, use the car less and buy vegetables from local sources, but do we really understand why? Specifically, it’s our carbon emissions that are having an impact on climate change. Whether that’s emissions from landfill, car exhaust fumes or vegetables that are being flown half way around the world, they all add up.

Global warming is an increasing problem, and temperatures are set to rise above pre-industrial levels. This year, figures show we’re 1.02C above the average between 1850 and 1900. 2C is considered to be the gateway to dangerous levels of global warming. At the moment, we’re 1C above pre-industrial levels which is a significant marker because it puts us half way towards the 2C gateway. Increasing temperatures mean a change in our environment, for example, the oceans are getting warmer which has an impact on many different species of flora and fauna.

In December this year, 190 countries are coming together at COP21. COP21, also known as the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, will “aim to achieve legally binding and universal agreement on climate, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2C.”

Running across two days, the conference will feature a range of speakers including a welcome address from Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. Talks will be interspersed with networking opportunities and insight sessions which will aim to give attendees the chance to discuss topical issues that will then be developed into a post event report. Follow @Climate_Action_ for more information during the week, or have a look at their website:http://www.cop21paris.org/.

Here at Paper Round, we’re holding a Climate Week to coincide with the conference. We’ll be bringing you regular updates via our social media channels of what we’re up to. Plans include, Wildlife Wednesday and Meatfree Monday.
