On the surface, plans unveiled by the Government outlining a plastic bag charge seems to be a long awaited step in the right direction. In Wales the levy has reduced the number of bags by 75%. Although the levy is set to come in next year, the big difference is that there are a number of exemptions watering down the impact. For example, if there’s less than 250 employees in the company. Equally, paper bags would not be charged for despite the fact they have greater carbon emissions than plastic carrier bags and are less likely to be able to be reused.
