World Environment Day

With today being World Environment Day, what better topic for today’s blog entry? This year the day is being hosted globally by Barbados. Currently Barbados is leading the way in solar energy and as one of the smallest, independent states in the world they face a vast array of challenges: most notably these are rising sea levels and their vulnerability to natural disasters. In order to overcome these challenges they are working towards a green economy.

Across the globe on World Environment Day people are being encouraged to make a pledge to buy local, use a reusable bag for shopping, use less packaging and sharing cars. Look out for tree planting events in schools to promote food security and biodiversity and climate responsibility. On Thursday 5th June, Barbadians are being encouraged to wear green to show their support. There are also ceremonies across the island.

So, that’s all well and good but what can we do to get involved? Firstly, by pledging the very same things – to use reusable bags, use less packaging and share a car. The day is organized by the United Nations Environment Programme and is a chance for the whole world to come together in their efforts towards tackling climate change.
